Events people experience help mold who they choose to become and the opinions and ideas they choose to hold. These events indirectly influence others who haven’t known them by manifesting themselves in the actions and statements of the person around who experienced them. This means the experiences are able to make an exponential impact when shared with others. I want to be a vessel for this kind of influence. I hope to broaden my own world view in order to share my findings with people in my own sphere of influence. I want to be able to contribute to class discussions with firsthand examples of how social issues are handled elsewhere in the world. I wish to share with my classmates and home community members the lessons I learned in my studies abroad and about the relationships with people I had the privilege to meet. Being exposed to entirely new cultures would obviously increase my global awareness and, therefore, help me grow as a citizen. I believe that heightened perspective of empathy is contagious. I’m not saying that a global engagement experience would cause me to change the world, but it would provide me with a confidence of personal interaction with larger social issues and concerns common across cultures and over political boundaries. I would take full responsibility to carry my knowledge and experience to others I come in contact with in order to amplify their message, because it would be shameful, not to mention selfish, to let the effect of the events stop with the person who experienced them.
